Passive Control of Ultra-Span Twin-Box Girder Suspension Bridges under Vortex-Induced Vibration Using Tuned Mass Dampers: A Sensitivity Analysis

Suspension bridges’ in-plane extended configuration makes them vulnerable to wind-induced vibrations. Vortex shedding is a kind of aerodynamic phenomenon causing bridge vibrate in vertical and torsional modes. Vortex-induced vibrations disturb the bridge’s serviceability limit, which not favorable, long run, they can cause fatigue damage. In this condition, vibration control strategies seem be essential. paper, performance tuned mass damper (TMD) investigated under vortex for an ultra-span streamlined twin-box girder suspension bridge. regard, sensitivity TMD parameters was addressed according responses bridge, reached appropriate ranges are compared with outputs provided by genetic algorithm. The results indicated that installation three TMDs could all modes reduce rotation up 34%.
